As promised, fashioned out of wood reclaimed from two now defunct Yorkshire cobble fishing boats. The top photo shows cut out templates before sanding to fit, the bottom the finished glued and varnished animals.
They stand 50 cms long and the colours, age and patina have almost brought these to life - l love em!

Much like the Puffins before - was asked twice for Toucans at the Festival of Thrift - well here they are! I have been holding on to a nice piece of old boat hull with blue and white markings which i thought at some point would turn into a fish possibly the underside of a humpback whale. Today scouring my usual haunts I was fortunate enough to find the perfect accompaniment a grey and multi coloured piece of decking or similar, complete with copper nails....hopefully make the wales tomorrow...watch this space! An excellent couple of days at the festival of thrift ...stuff went down well (it is all reclaimed/up cycled driftwood after all) 'Boom Bike Bourree' were worth the trip alone....so cool in fact thinking of asking for an audition. Unfortunately profits to be spent on a bespoke left handed 'jack daniels' tin banjo....the down side of being next to a talented luthier!!!!
still panicking about not having enough stock for the festival of thrift so have spent today making some rainbow star garlands.......the days just fly by...
I have spent the day 'making' for the festival of thrift...worried i run out of stock! As promised here are some examples of unusual pieces i have found recently - if you have any views or want anything bespoke making use the contact page - or message me on facebook - The link is on the home page...many thanks to those of you have attended the craft fairs or taken time out to visit the web site etc your support is appreciated. It is as it was found...the first pieces definitely have future aspirations as a bird and a fish ????
Okay okay I know i haven't posted for a while - been too busy - but for those of you who have asked the drift wood comes from Redcar, Seaton Carew and Seaham (where I also get the seaglass...look it up online - the old Victorian glass factory and the fact it is the only place in the world that multi-coloured seaglass can be found!)
However I regularly take a trip to the west coast of Scotland - Oban and the Mull of Galloway, where some excellent bleached pieces can be found particularly in some of the secluded coves that can only be reached by Kayak - Some of these pieces i treat like currency (you wouldn't believe what people are selling driftwood for on ebay) most i keep with a few ideas in mind for some special perhaps less commercial work........ Ill post some examples and you'll see what I mean...you might have some ideas yourselves? More blogs in future i promise. |
